At the heart of the Emblavez region (a wheat-growing area), the village of Blanlhac has been home to up to 17 windmills. During a tour with enthusiastic local guides, you will learn all about the windmills’ history and see how they work. By reservation at the Tourist Office.
Description
You will see a demonstration of flour-making in the windmill with a restored horizontal wheel.
The visit includes a series of interesting discoveries:
- A model of the entire windmill site can be seen in one of the windmills.
- The hydraulic mills on the canal lock are in working order (cyclist pedalling on the water, musical merry-go-round).
- Two windmill games (or nine men's morris: a medieval game) can be played at the site entrance.
Visits on Wednesdays from 19 July to 30 August, at 3 p.m.
For groups, the site is open on reservation every day from 1 April to 31 October.
Ecotourism:
Since 1993 volunteers with a love for the Blanlhac windmills have been working to renovate this historic site. The site was in ruins when the association bought it, and extensive renovations have since been carried out to restore the windmill to its old splendour. The flagstone roof, the traditional wooden framework and the millstone are all examples of the skills and traditional heritage being preserved. You can follow a short trail in the company of your guide and explore the local plant life, geology and the history of the windmills... Come and visit this site with its magical atmosphere in a preserved natural setting. An ecologically-friendly experience to enjoy with the conservation of the windmill heritage, a chance to see how flour is made and a quiet, well-preserved natural site.
